The first meeting of the Board of the Loss and Damage Fund established at COP28 in Dubai took place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 30 April to 2 May 2024. Ahead of this important event, CRS, CIDSE and Caritas Internationalis sent a letter to the members of the Board to congratulate them on their appointment and to outline what they believe should be the priorities of the Board, urging them to act and support those hardest hit by the climate crisis.
The priorities for the Loss and Damage Fund outlined in the letter were:
- 1) Accessible
Ensures Global South communities receive necessary funds for recovery and autonomy. - 2) Comprehensive Support
Addresses both economic and non-economic impacts, including extreme weather and gradual environmental changes. - 3) Restorative Grants
Offers grants, not loans. - 4) Representative Governance
Rooted in human rights and subsidiarity, managed by a fair board for the common good. - 5) Efficient & Effective
Delivers quick disaster relief, ongoing protection, and serves as the primary global fund for loss and damage mitigation.
